(More customer reviews)The instruction book says this can be built by a child "with adult supervision", but I disagree. I'm still in the process of building it even though I bought it more than a month ago, but I'm not in a big rush, so I'm doing it a few hours a week, and sanding pieces even though the instructions don't say they need to be sanded before final staining.
First off, when I read the instructions, I was under the impression that any cutting that needed to be done could be handled with a small hand-held hacksaw. Well, that's true...if you want to be there for three days manually sawing through glued-together pieces to create dormer roof angles and such. So hubby had to do the cutting for me on his table saw.
The instructions...both written and pictorial...are clear enough if you take time to read them as many times as necessary to understand them. I wouldn't expect a child of ten or twelve to be able to do it, though.
The furniture is basic, although the hutch is a bit tricky because of the hinged lower doors.
I spent two days sanding the pieces inside and out after discovering that the final stain will go on easier and look better, and just yesterday attached the front and side walls and the first and second floor. All in all, I would say that it's probably going to look pretty neat when it's done.
The pieces are glued (I recommend Titebond III wood glue), so I don't know how sturdy it would be under play conditions, but the house I'm building is going to be for display with purchased miniature furnishings.
Fun for all, and relatively educational, giving kids a rudimentary lesson in home construction...but don't let the kids do this alone.
